Administration officials confirmed the initiation of federal worker layoffs on the end of the week, making good on prior threats in response to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is now poised to stretch into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Early Information

The director of the White House budget office wrote on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the official process for terminating staff.

Although the official provided no details on which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that layoff warnings had been distributed within that agency. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security representative indicated that staff reductions would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a labor organization for federal workers announced that employees at the Education Department would be affected by the reduction in force.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives warned that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on public services relied upon by millions of Americans and vowed to contest the actions in court.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has used the funding lapse as an pretext to illegally fire numerous employees who deliver essential functions to the public nationwide,” stated a national union president, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US responded to the news, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute

Congressional Democrats have refused to support a Republican-backed legislation to restore funding unless it includes provisions related to health policy. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, indicating the standoff is unlikely to be resolved soon.

During a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, criticized Senate Democrats for not supporting the Republican proposal, which was approved in the House on a largely partisan basis.

A public service advocate, the head of the advocacy group, condemned the political stalemate’s effect on government workers.

“It is wrong to make government staff suffer because our elected officials in Congress and the administration have not succeeded to keep our government running,” the advocate stated. The air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not responsible for this government shutdown.”
