Trump's Progressive Alarm Overlooks Europe's True Threat: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a flawed view of Europe. It claims that open-border policies and what it terms "progressive" policies represent an grave risk to European civilization. Yet, this argument rests on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The true challenge confronting Europe is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Gap Between Europe and the US

Statistics paint a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, compared to a paltry 13.5% growth for the EU. Over this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, about half of the global 50 largest technology firms are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Question

The growing economic gap is driven by stronger productivity growth in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly American. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at over $10bn, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity raises a pressing question: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is Europe stand? Experts widely concede it is largely a contest between two between the US and China, with Europe starting at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of major reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and agile network for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, which limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under a single regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population, is divided among 27 separate systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was once met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, there are causes for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to advance serious reform. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for sweeping reforms.

With the right policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses significant advantages: high-quality human capital, excellent education systems, and world-class labs. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to unleash a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing next-generation tech, it can still significantly boost productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been steady. However, without bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
