"Do you know when you'll be interviewing the Haim sisters?" an inquiry arrives. "My request was to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

However, there remains one problem: The sender also desires to be Haim's newest recruit. What's more, we are far from alone. A host of celebrated fans have also petitioned for the position.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey doing sets at small eateries with their family. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy Award nominees.

Like all the greatest groups, they're a tight-knit unit. Their visuals often depict them marching in harmony down the streets of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such boundless exuberance you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be involved in that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that fans told us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a drum kit'," says Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "That is the greatest compliment. That is recognition in itself. We have succeeded if we can motivate people to start a band."

"Therefore all is invited to be the next part of the family."

Award Recognition

The band are speaking from their homes, where they're resting up after an extensive tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first all-female band ever in contention for the prize.

"I follow the lists every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I imagining things'?"

The weight of the accolade isn't lost on the sisters.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a significant step," says Alana. "However we're just appreciative for the pioneers that came before us."

Heartbreak and Humour

The project emerged from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that strange in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not entirely ready to let go.

The lyrics track endings and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them working out in real life who they are becoming.

"I love summary, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a slogan. You have to consciously practice blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Development of Music

That newfound resilience called for a new sound – more unpolished and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the drums.

"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums cannot begin until we find the ideal drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Laughter

The band's candor inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their dating tales.

A former partner ended things with Este over a health consideration. Alana recalled a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Path

You can clearly sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their place in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an international fan base.

Yet the sister act will consistently be their top priority.

"Me and my siblings have been performing since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
