Each time a significant honors show nears, there’s always an outcry to include fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. So would board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.
To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens outstanding logic titles published annually that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
- Another creative title was excluded in 2019
- A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
- Just some logic titles scraped into niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
