In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The September uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's established political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Underway

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of leading political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
